Welcome to Your Brain’s Superpower Training!

Imagine your brain has a remote control with two buttons: GO and STOP.

Sometimes the GO button feels really strong—like when you see a cookie before dinner, or when your friend takes your favorite toy. But guess what? Your STOP button is a superpower waiting to be trained!


🧠 What is Impulse Control?

Impulse = That sudden urge to do something RIGHT NOW!

Control = Your power to WAIT and CHOOSE wisely.

Think of a puppy who sees a squirrel. The puppy wants to chase it immediately! That’s an impulse. But a trained dog can sit and wait, even when the squirrel is dancing right there. That’s impulse control!

Impulse (GO!) Control (WAIT!)

💪 Self-Control Exercises

Exercise 1: The Marshmallow Game

Picture this: Someone puts ONE marshmallow in front of you. They say, “If you DON’T eat this for 5 minutes, you get TWO marshmallows!”

What would you do?

This famous experiment showed that kids who could wait often did better in school and life later. The secret? They used tricks:

  • 🙈 Look away from the marshmallow
  • 🎵 Sing a song in your head
  • 🖼️ Imagine the marshmallow is just a picture
  • 🦸 Pretend you’re a superhero who doesn’t need it

Exercise 2: Red Light, Green Light (Brain Edition)

Your thoughts are like cars on a road:

Practice sorting your thoughts:

Exercise 3: The Freeze Dance

When music plays = MOVE freely! When music stops = FREEZE like a statue!

This game trains your brain to STOP when needed. The more you practice, the faster your brain’s STOP button works!

Exercise 4: Belly Breathing

When you feel that RUSH of energy:

  1. Put your hand on your belly
  2. Breathe in slowly (belly goes OUT like a balloon)
  3. Hold for 2 seconds
  4. Breathe out slowly (belly goes IN)
  5. Repeat 3 times

Why it works: Deep breathing tells your brain, “Everything is okay. We can think clearly now.”


😤 Frustration Tolerance

Frustration = That GRRRR feeling when things don’t go your way.

Tolerance = Being able to handle that feeling without exploding!

The goal isn’t to never feel frustrated. The goal is to catch yourself before the explosion and use your tools!

🛠️ Your Frustration Toolbox

Tool 1: Count Backwards When frustrated, count: 10… 9… 8… 7… 6… 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… This gives your brain time to calm down.

Tool 2: The Squeeze and Release

  • Make tight fists (squeeze all your frustration in)
  • Hold for 5 seconds
  • Release and shake your hands
  • Feel the frustration leaving!

Tool 3: Name Your Feeling Say: “I feel frustrated because ___________.”

Just naming the feeling helps shrink it!

Tool 4: The 5-Minute Rule Tell yourself: “I can handle this for 5 more minutes.” Often, the hard thing becomes easier or ends before 5 minutes!

🎯 Frustration Scenarios

Scenario 1: You can’t tie your shoelaces.

  • ❌ Impulse: Throw the shoe!
  • ✅ Control: Take a breath, try again slowly, or ask for help.

Scenario 2: You’re losing a game.

  • ❌ Impulse: Flip the board!
  • ✅ Control: Remember it’s just a game. You can try again.

Scenario 3: Your tower of blocks keeps falling.

  • ❌ Impulse: Knock everything down in anger!
  • ✅ Control: Notice what’s making it fall. Try a different way.

🌈 Building Your Self-Control Muscle

Just like your arms get stronger when you exercise, your self-control gets stronger with practice!

Monday Wait 10 seconds before answering
Tuesday Let someone else go first
Wednesday Put away one toy before playing
Thursday Take 3 deep breaths when upset
Friday Finish a boring task before fun

  • You use words instead of pushing
