The Magic Kingdom of Hangul: Your Journey to Korean Letters

Welcome to Hangul Land! ๐Ÿฐ

Imagine youโ€™re entering a magical kingdom where shapes have superpowers. Each shape makes a special sound. When you put these shapes together, they become words! This is Hangul โ€” the Korean alphabet.

Hereโ€™s a secret: A wise king named Sejong invented Hangul about 600 years ago. He wanted everyone to read and write easily. So he made letters that look like what your mouth does when you say them!

Think of it like this: Your mouth is a musical instrument, and Hangul letters are the instruction manual!

Part 1: Basic Consonants โ€” The Starter Squad

These are your first 9 friends. Theyโ€™re the foundation of everything!

Meet the Basic 9

Letter Sound Memory Trick
ใ„ฑ g/k Looks like a gun corner
ใ„ด n Looks like a nose from the side
ใ„ท d/t Looks like a door frame
ใ„น r/l Looks like a rolling river
ใ… m Looks like a mouth (square!)
ใ…‚ b/p Looks like a bucket
ใ…… s Looks like a seashell peak
ใ…‡ ng/silent A zero โ€” silent at start!
ใ…ˆ j Looks like a jug with handle

The Mouth Secret ๐Ÿคซ

King Sejong was clever! He drew these letters based on your mouth:

  • ใ… (m) = Your lips closed (a square!)
  • ใ„ด (n) = Your tongue touching the roof
  • ใ…… (s) = Your teeth (pointy!)

Example time:

  • ๊ฐ€ (ga) = ใ„ฑ + ใ… = โ€œgaโ€ like โ€œgotโ€
  • ๋‚˜ (na) = ใ„ด + ใ… = โ€œnaโ€ like โ€œnotโ€
  • ์‚ฌ (sa) = ใ…… + ใ… = โ€œsaโ€ like โ€œsawโ€

Part 2: Aspirated Consonants โ€” The Windy Cousins

These are the โ€œextra breathyโ€ versions. Hold your hand in front of your mouth. When you say these, you feel wind!

The Breathy 4

Letter Sound Itโ€™s Likeโ€ฆ
ใ…‹ k (strong) ใ„ฑ + extra breath!
ใ…Œ t (strong) ใ„ท + extra breath!
ใ… p (strong) ใ…‚ + extra breath!
ใ…Š ch (strong) ใ…ˆ + extra breath!

See the Pattern?

Look closely:

  • ใ„ฑ โ†’ ใ…‹ (added a line = added breath!)
  • ใ„ท โ†’ ใ…Œ (added a line = added breath!)
  • ใ…‚ โ†’ ใ… (added a line = added breath!)
  • ใ…ˆ โ†’ ใ…Š (added a line = added breath!)

The rule: More lines = More breath = Stronger sound!

Example time:

  • ์นด (ka) = Like โ€œcarโ€ with a puff
  • ํƒ€ (ta) = Like โ€œtarโ€ with a puff
  • ํŒŒ (pa) = Like โ€œparโ€ with a puff
  • ์ฐจ (cha) = Like โ€œcharโ€ with a puff

Part 3: Double Consonants โ€” The Tense Twins

These are double trouble! Say them with tight muscles in your throat. No breath this time โ€” just tension!

The Tense 5

Letter Sound Feel
ใ„ฒ kk Tight โ€œkโ€
ใ„ธ tt Tight โ€œtโ€
ใ…ƒ pp Tight โ€œpโ€
ใ…† ss Tight โ€œsโ€
ใ…‰ jj Tight โ€œjโ€

How to Say Them

  1. Tighten your throat
  2. Donโ€™t let air out
  3. Make a sharp, short sound

Think of it like:

  • Regular ใ„ฑ = Saying โ€œgoโ€ normally
  • Aspirated ใ…‹ = Saying โ€œgoโ€ while blowing out a candle
  • Double ใ„ฒ = Saying โ€œgoโ€ while holding your breath

Example time:

  • ๊นŒ (kka) = Sharp, no air
  • ๋น  (ppa) = Sharp, no air
  • ์‹ธ (ssa) = Sharp, no air

Part 4: Basic Vowels โ€” The Simple Sounds

Now for the vowels! These are sticks and dots. So simple!

The Big Idea

King Sejong used 3 symbols:

  • โ€ข (dot) = The Sun (heaven) โ€” now written as a short line
  • ใ…ก (horizontal line) = The Earth (flat)
  • ใ…ฃ (vertical line) = A Person (standing)

The Basic 6

Letter Sound What It Looks Like
ใ… a (ah) Person + sun on right
ใ…“ eo (uh) Person + sun on left
ใ…— o (oh) Earth + sun above
ใ…œ u (oo) Earth + sun below
ใ…ก eu (uh) Just the earth line
ใ…ฃ i (ee) Just the person line

The Position Secret ๐Ÿ”ฎ

Where the short line is tells you the sound:

  • Right side (ใ…) = โ€œahโ€ โ€” open mouth
  • Left side (ใ…“) = โ€œuhโ€ โ€” less open
  • Above (ใ…—) = โ€œohโ€ โ€” lips round, up
  • Below (ใ…œ) = โ€œooโ€ โ€” lips round, down

Example time:

  • ์•„ (a) = โ€œahโ€ like โ€œfatherโ€
  • ์˜ค (o) = โ€œohโ€ like โ€œgoโ€
  • ์šฐ (u) = โ€œooโ€ like โ€œmoonโ€
  • ์ด (i) = โ€œeeโ€ like โ€œseeโ€

Part 5: Y-Compound Vowels โ€” Adding โ€œYโ€ Power

Want to add a โ€œyโ€ sound? Just add another short line!

The Y-Family

Letter Sound Formula
ใ…‘ ya ใ… + extra line
ใ…• yeo ใ…“ + extra line
ใ…› yo ใ…— + extra line
ใ…  yu ใ…œ + extra line

See the Magic?

  • ใ… (a) โ†’ ใ…‘ (ya) โ€” one line becomes two!
  • ใ…“ (eo) โ†’ ใ…• (yeo) โ€” one line becomes two!
  • ใ…— (o) โ†’ ใ…› (yo) โ€” one line becomes two!
  • ใ…œ (u) โ†’ ใ…  (yu) โ€” one line becomes two!

The rule: Double the short lines = Add โ€œyโ€!

Example time:

  • ์•ผ (ya) = โ€œyaโ€ like โ€œyachtโ€
  • ์š” (yo) = โ€œyoโ€ like โ€œyo-yoโ€
  • ์œ  (yu) = โ€œyouโ€ likeโ€ฆ โ€œyouโ€!

Part 6: Diphthong Vowels โ€” The Blended Sounds

These vowels glide from one sound to another. Your mouth moves while you say them!

The Gliders

Letter Sound It Combinesโ€ฆ
ใ… ae (eh) ใ… + ใ…ฃ blended
ใ…” e (eh) ใ…“ + ใ…ฃ blended
ใ…’ yae ใ…‘ + ใ…ฃ blended
ใ…– ye ใ…• + ใ…ฃ blended
ใ…š oe (weh) ใ…— + ใ…ฃ blended
ใ…Ÿ wi ใ…œ + ใ…ฃ blended
ใ…ข ui ใ…ก + ใ…ฃ blended

The Blending Secret

Look at the shapes! Theyโ€™re literally two vowels combined:

  • ใ… + ใ…ฃ = ใ… (a + i = ae)
  • ใ…“ + ใ…ฃ = ใ…” (eo + i = e)

Fun fact: ใ… and ใ…” sound almost the same today (โ€œehโ€). Even Koreans mix them up!

Example time:

  • ์•  (ae) = โ€œehโ€ like โ€œbedโ€
  • ์˜ˆ (ye) = โ€œyehโ€ like โ€œyesโ€
  • ์˜ (ui) = Start with โ€œeu,โ€ slide to โ€œeeโ€

Part 7: W-Compound Vowels โ€” The โ€œWโ€ Warriors

These start with a โ€œwโ€ sound. Your lips round first, then open!

The W-Family

Letter Sound It Combinesโ€ฆ
ใ…˜ wa ใ…— + ใ…
ใ…™ wae ใ…— + ใ…
ใ… wo ใ…œ + ใ…“
ใ…ž we ใ…œ + ใ…”

Building W-Vowels

Start with a round vowel (ใ…— or ใ…œ), then add another:

  • ใ…— + ใ… = ใ…˜ (o + a = wa)
  • ใ…œ + ใ…“ = ใ… (u + eo = wo)

Your mouth journey:

  1. Start with lips rounded (o or u)
  2. Open to the second vowel (a, ae, eo, e)
  3. You made a โ€œwโ€ sound!

Example time:

  • ์™€ (wa) = โ€œwaโ€ like โ€œwaterโ€
  • ์›Œ (wo) = โ€œwoโ€ like โ€œwonderโ€
  • ์™œ (wae) = โ€œwehโ€ like โ€œwetโ€
  • ์›จ (we) = โ€œwehโ€ like โ€œwebโ€
