🔗 Connections and Logic in French

Making Your Ideas Flow Like a River

Imagine you’re building with LEGO blocks. Each block is a thought. But to make something amazing, you need connectors — special pieces that join your blocks together in different ways.

French has these magical connectors too! They help you explain WHY things happen, WHAT you want, EVEN IF something is different, HOW SURE you are, and HOW THINGS COMPARE.

Let’s discover these five super-powers! 🦸

🎯 1. Cause and Effect

“Because the rain fell, the flowers grew”

Think of dominoes falling. One thing causes another thing to happen. In French, we have special words to show this chain reaction!

The Magic Words

French English When to Use
parce que because Explaining why (after the result)
car for/because More formal, written French
puisque since When the reason is obvious
comme as/since Reason at the START of sentence
donc so/therefore Showing the result
alors so/then Casual result
c’est pourquoi that’s why Formal result

🌟 Real Examples

Explaining WHY something happened:

Je reste à la maison parce qu’il pleut. I’m staying home because it’s raining.

Comme il pleut, je reste à la maison. Since it’s raining, I’m staying home.

Notice: Comme goes at the START. Parce que goes in the MIDDLE!

Showing WHAT HAPPENED as a result:

Il pleut, donc je reste à la maison. It’s raining, so I’m staying home.

Tu es fatigué, alors repose-toi! You’re tired, so rest!

💡 The Secret Pattern

CAUSE → RESULT
Il fait froid → donc je porte un manteau
(It's cold) → (so I wear a coat)

RESULT ← CAUSE
Je porte un manteau ← parce qu'il fait froid
(I wear a coat) ← (because it's cold)

🎯 2. Expressing Purpose

“I’m learning French TO travel to Paris”

Purpose is like having a goal or a dream. You do something IN ORDER TO achieve something else. It’s about YOUR intention!

The Magic Words

French English Structure
pour to/in order to + infinitive verb
pour que so that + subjunctive
afin de in order to + infinitive (formal)
afin que so that + subjunctive (formal)

🌟 Real Examples

Simple purpose (same subject):

J’étudie pour réussir. I study to succeed.

Elle travaille pour gagner de l’argent. She works to earn money.

When someone else benefits (different subjects):

Je parle lentement pour que tu comprennes. I speak slowly so that you understand.

Il ferme la porte pour que le chat ne sorte pas. He closes the door so that the cat doesn’t go out.

💡 The Simple Rule

Same person doing both actions?
→ Use POUR + infinitive

Different people involved?
→ Use POUR QUE + subjunctive

🎯 3. Expressing Concession

“Even though it’s raining, I’m happy!”

Concession is like saying “Yes, BUT…” or “DESPITE this, that still happened.” It’s when reality surprises expectations!

The Magic Words

French English Mood
mais but
bien que although + subjunctive
même si even if + indicative
quoique although + subjunctive
malgré despite + noun
pourtant however
cependant however

🌟 Real Examples

The easy ones:

Il pleut, mais je sors. It’s raining, but I’m going out.

Même si tu es fatigué, tu dois finir. Even if you’re tired, you must finish.

The fancy ones (with subjunctive):

Bien qu’il pleuve, je suis heureux. Although it’s raining, I’m happy.

Quoiqu’elle soit jeune, elle est sage. Although she’s young, she’s wise.

With just a noun:

Malgré la pluie, nous sortons. Despite the rain, we’re going out.

Rain → you’d expect staying inside → BUT you go out anyway!

🎯 4. Certainty and Doubt

“I’m SURE vs. I THINK vs. Maybe…”

Sometimes you’re 100% certain. Sometimes you’re just guessing. French has different ways to show how confident you are!

The Certainty Scale 📊

100% SURE ════════════════════► 0% SURE
│ │
Je sais que... Je doute que...
(I know that...) (I doubt that...)
     ↓ ↓
  INDICATIVE SUBJUNCTIVE

The Magic Words

Level French English Mood
💯 Sure je sais que I know that indicative
💯 Sure il est certain que it’s certain that indicative
💯 Sure je suis sûr(e) que I’m sure that indicative
🤔 Think je pense que I think that indicative
🤔 Think je crois que I believe that indicative
❓ Maybe peut-être que maybe indicative
😕 Doubt je doute que I doubt that subjunctive
😕 Doubt il est possible que it’s possible that subjunctive
❌ Negative je ne pense pas que I don’t think that subjunctive

🌟 Real Examples

When you’re SURE (indicative):

Je sais qu’il vient demain. I know he’s coming tomorrow.

Il est certain que nous réussirons. It’s certain that we’ll succeed.

When you DOUBT (subjunctive):

Je doute qu’il vienne demain. I doubt he’s coming tomorrow.

Il est possible qu’elle soit malade. It’s possible she’s sick.

💡 The Golden Rule

Certainty = Indicative (facts!) Doubt = Subjunctive (maybe!)

When you NEGATE a certainty phrase, it becomes doubt:

  • Je pense que… (indicative) → Je ne pense pas que… (subjunctive!)

🎯 5. Expressing Comparison

“Bigger than, smaller than, the same as”

Comparison is like having a measuring stick. Is this MORE, LESS, or EQUAL to that?

The Three Types
