🎨 French Adjectives: The Magic Paintbrush

Imagine you have a magic paintbrush. Every time you describe something in French, your adjective changes color to match what you’re describing!

🌟 The Big Idea

In French, adjectives are like chameleons—they change their ending to match the noun they describe. Think of it like putting on the right costume for a party!

English: The tall boy, the tall girl → same word “tall” French: Le grand garçon, la grande fille → “grand” changes to “grande”!

1️⃣ Gender Agreement: Boy Words vs Girl Words

Every French noun is either masculine (boy) or feminine (girl). Your adjective must match!

The Simple Rule 🎯

Masculine → Add -e Feminine
petit petite
grand grande
bleu bleue

Wait! If It Already Ends in -E…

No change needed! It’s already dressed for both parties.

  • rouge (red) → rouge (same!)
  • jeune (young) → jeune (same!)

Special Costume Changes 🎭

Some adjectives have fancy costume changes:

Masculine Feminine Meaning
beau belle beautiful
nouveau nouvelle new
vieux vieille old
blanc blanche white
heureux heureuse happy

Example Story: Pierre has a beautiful dog: un beau chien. Marie has a beautiful cat: une belle chatte.

2️⃣ Number Agreement: One or Many?

Now your adjective needs to know: are we talking about ONE thing or MANY things?

The Simple Rule 🎯

Singular → Add -s Plural
petit petits
petite petites

The Complete Picture

Imagine a grid:

           Singular Plural
Masculine: petit → petits
Feminine: petite → petites

Example:

  • One small boy: un petit garçon
  • Two small boys: deux petits garçons
  • One small girl: une petite fille
  • Two small girls: deux petites filles

Already Ends in -S or -X?

No change for plural!

  • gros (big) → gros (same in plural!)
  • heureux (happy) → heureux (same!)

3️⃣ Where Does the Adjective Go? 🗺️

Here’s where French gets tricky—and fun!

Most Adjectives: AFTER the Noun

Unlike English, most French adjectives come after what they describe.

English French
a blue car une voiture bleue
a French book un livre français
an interesting movie un film intéressant

Think of it like this: English: “I want the RED apple” French: “I want the apple RED” → une pomme rouge

4️⃣ BAGS Adjectives: The VIP Club 🌟

Some special adjectives get to go BEFORE the noun. Remember them with BAGS:

Letter Category Examples
B Beauty beau, joli (beautiful, pretty)
A Age jeune, vieux, nouveau (young, old, new)
G Goodness bon, mauvais, gentil (good, bad, nice)
S Size petit, grand, gros (small, big, large)

Examples in Action

  • A pretty flower → une jolie fleur
  • An old house → une vieille maison
  • A good friend → un bon ami
  • A big dog → un gros chien

The Memory Story 🧠

Imagine a BAG full of your favorite things: Beautiful jewelry, your grandma’s Antique watch, Good chocolate, and Small treasures. These special things go FIRST—just like BAGS adjectives!

5️⃣ Colors: Painting Your World 🌈

Colors follow the same gender rules, but they ALWAYS go AFTER the noun!

Color Chart

Masculine Feminine English
blanc blanche white
noir noire black
rouge rouge red
bleu bleue blue
vert verte green
jaune jaune yellow
gris grise gray
marron marron* brown
orange orange* orange

*Marron and orange NEVER change! They’re lazy colors.

Examples

  • a white cat: un chat blanc / une chatte blanche
  • blue eyes: les yeux bleus
  • a red dress: une robe rouge
  • brown shoes: des chaussures marron (no -es!)

6️⃣ Comparisons: Who’s Bigger, Better, Faster? 🏆

Now let’s compare things!

Comparative Forms: Comparing Two Things

Type Formula Example
More plus + adjective + que Marie est plus grande que Pierre
Less moins + adjective + que Pierre est moins grand que Marie
Equal aussi + adjective + que Paul est aussi grand que Jean

Translation:

  • Marie is taller than Pierre
  • Pierre is less tall than Marie
  • Paul is as tall as Jean

Picture This 📊

Pierre: 🧍 (160cm)
Marie: 🧍‍♀️ (170cm)

Marie est PLUS grande QUE Pierre.
Pierre est MOINS grand QUE Marie.

Special Comparatives 🌟

Some adjectives have special comparative forms (just like English!):

Adjective Comparative English
bon (good) meilleur better
mauvais (bad) pire worse

Never say: plus bonAlways say: meilleur ✅

  • This cake is better: Ce gâteau est meilleur
  • This movie is worse: Ce film est pire

7️⃣ Superlatives: The Champion! 🥇

Want to say something is THE BEST or THE BIGGEST? Use superlatives!

The Formula

le/la/les + plus + adjective

Type Formula Example
The most le/la/les plus + adjective Marie est la plus grande
The least le/la/les moins + adjective Pierre est le moins grand

Examples

  • The tallest girl: la plus grande fille
  • The smallest boys: les plus petits garçons
  • The most interesting book: le livre le plus intéressant

Where Does It Go? 📍

BAGS adjectives (before noun): la plus jolie fleur (the prettiest flower)

Other adjectives (after noun): le livre le plus intéressant (the most interesting book)

Special Superlatives 🌟

Adjective Superlative English
bon le meilleur the best
mauvais le pire the worst
  • The best restaurant: le meilleur restaurant
  • The worst idea: la pire idée
