The Pitch

⚽ The Soccer Pitch: Your Giant Outdoor Playground!

Imagine you have a GIANT rectangle of green grass—like your backyard, but WAY bigger! That’s a soccer pitch. It’s where all the magic happens!

Think of the pitch like a big board game. Just like a board game has edges, spaces, and special spots, a soccer pitch has lines and areas that tell players where to go and what to do.

🏟️ Field Dimensions: How Big Is This Playground?

A soccer pitch isn’t just any rectangle. It has special sizes!

The Rules Say:

  • Length (long side): Between 100 and 130 yards (that’s about 90 to 120 meters)
  • Width (short side): Between 50 and 100 yards (about 45 to 90 meters)

🍕 Simple Example:

Imagine laying about 100 cars end-to-end along the long side. That’s how long a pitch can be! The short side? About 50 to 70 cars side-by-side.

Why Different Sizes?

Not all pitches are the same! A small school field might be smaller. A big stadium for professional games is usually bigger. But they ALL stay within these rules.

graph TD A[Soccer Pitch] --> B[Length: 100-130 yards] A --> C[Width: 50-100 yards] B --> D[About as long as a football field!] C --> E[Half as wide as it is long]

Fun Fact: A professional pitch is usually about 110 x 70 yards—that’s a LOT of running space!

📏 Touchlines and Goal Lines: The Edges of Your Playground

Every playground needs a fence, right? Well, the pitch has lines instead of fences!

What Are Touchlines? 🏃

  • The two LONG sides of the rectangle
  • Also called sidelines
  • When the ball goes over these? Throw-in!

What Are Goal Lines? 🥅

  • The two SHORT sides of the rectangle
  • The goals sit RIGHT on these lines
  • When the ball crosses here (and goes in the goal)? GOAL!
  • When it goes over but not in the goal? Corner kick or goal kick

🎯 Simple Example:

Think of your bed:

  • The long sides of your bed = Touchlines
  • The short sides (head and foot) = Goal Lines
  • The pillow = The goal!
graph TD A[The Pitch Rectangle] --> B[Long Sides = TOUCHLINES] A --> C[Short Sides = GOAL LINES] B --> D[Ball out here → Throw-in] C --> E[Goals sit on these lines] E --> F[Ball in goal → SCORE!] E --> G[Ball out but not goal → Corner or Goal Kick]

Remember: Touch the touchline = ball goes out the side. Goal line = ball goes out near the goal!

⭕ Halfway Line and Center Circle: The Middle of Everything

Right in the exact middle of the pitch, you’ll find two special things!

The Halfway Line 📐

  • A straight line that cuts the pitch in half
  • Goes from one touchline to the other
  • This is where the game starts and restarts after each goal!

The Center Circle ⚪

  • A big circle right in the middle of the halfway line
  • It’s 10 yards (about 9 meters) from the center to the edge
  • Only one team can be inside during kickoff!

🎪 Simple Example:

Imagine cutting a pizza in half with one big slice. That’s the halfway line! Now put a plate in the middle—that’s the center circle!

Why Does It Matter?

  • At kickoff, the other team must stay outside the center circle
  • It gives the kicking team space to start the play
  • The ball must move forward from the center spot
graph TD A[Halfway Line] --> B[Splits pitch in TWO equal halves] A --> C[Game starts here!] D[Center Circle] --> E[10 yards radius] D --> F[Only kicking team inside at kickoff] C --> G[Ball placed on center spot] G --> F

🪑 Technical Area: The Coach’s Special Zone

Ever wonder where the coach stands and shouts instructions? That’s the Technical Area!

What Is It?

  • A marked zone near the sideline (touchline)
  • Usually has the team benches nearby
  • Only one person (usually the coach) can stand in it at a time

The Rules:

  • Extends 1 yard (1 meter) on each side of the bench area
  • Goes forward to within 1 yard of the touchline
  • The coach must stay inside this box!

🏠 Simple Example:

Think of it like a little porch outside a house. The coach can stand on the porch to watch the game, but can’t run onto the grass (the pitch)!

graph TD A[Technical Area] --> B[Coach's special zone] A --> C[Near the team benches] A --> D[1 yard from touchline] B --> E[Only ONE person can stand here] E --> F[Usually the head coach] C --> G[Players wait on bench nearby]

Fun Fact: If a coach gets too excited and steps OUT of the technical area, the referee might give them a warning! 🟨

🎯 Quick Recap: Your Soccer Pitch Map

Part What It Is Remember It Like…
Dimensions 100-130 yards long, 50-100 yards wide 100 cars long!
Touchlines Long sides of the rectangle Long sides of your bed
Goal Lines Short sides with goals Head & foot of bed

🌟 You Got This!

Now you know the pitch like a pro!

The soccer field isn’t just grass—it’s a carefully measured playground with special zones for special actions. Every line has a purpose. Every area has a rule.

Next time you watch a game, you’ll know EXACTLY what those lines mean! ⚽

Remember our board game idea? The pitch IS the board. The lines ARE the rules. And the players? They’re the game pieces making magic happen!
