The Magic Map of Your Home: Bagua Basics
Once Upon a Time in Ancient China…
Imagine you have a treasure map for your bedroom, your house, or even your whole apartment. But instead of showing where gold coins are buried, this map shows where special energy lives in every corner!
This magical map is called the Bagua (say it like “BAH-gwah”). It’s like a pizza cut into pieces, but instead of pepperoni and cheese, each slice has a superpower — like helping you do better at school, making your family happier, or even bringing good luck!
What is the Bagua Map?
Think of your room like a game board. The Bagua map divides this game board into 9 special zones, and each zone controls something different in your life.
graph TD A[🗺️ BAGUA MAP] --> B[Your Room = Game Board] B --> C[9 Special Zones] C --> D[Each Zone = Different Superpower] D --> E[Place right things = Activate powers!]
The Simple Idea
| What It Is | What It Does |
|---|---|
| A map overlay | Fits on top of any room |
| 9 sections | Each section = one life area |
| Compass directions | North, South, East, etc. |
| Energy booster | Right stuff in right place = good things happen! |
Example: If you want to be smarter at math, you’d put special things in your “Knowledge area.” If you want your family to be happy, you’d put special things in your “Family area.”
How to Use the Bagua Map
Step 1: Stand at your bedroom door, looking IN.
Step 2: The wall with your door is always the BOTTOM of your map.
Step 3: Now imagine the Bagua grid floating over your room!

↑ YOU ARE HERE (DOOR) ↑
1. Career Area (North) — Your “What I Want to Be” Corner
The Story
The Career area is like the engine of a car. It’s in the North part of your room (usually near your door). This zone controls your life path — what you want to be when you grow up, your dreams, and your journey through life.
What Lives Here?
| Element | Color | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Water 💧 | Black & Dark Blue | Flowing shapes |
Why Water?
Water flows and finds its way around rocks and mountains. Just like water, your career should flow naturally. When water is blocked, it gets stuck and yucky. When it flows, it’s fresh and alive!
Real Example
Maya’s Story: Maya wanted to be a veterinarian. Her Career area had old broken toys piled up. She cleaned it out and put:
- A small fountain (water energy!)
- A picture of herself with animals
- A black picture frame
Within months, she got picked for the school’s animal care club!
What to Put Here
- Small water fountain or picture of water
- Black or dark blue items
- Wavy, flowing shapes
- Pictures of your dream job
- Mirrors (they represent water!)
What to Avoid
- Fire colors (red, orange) — fire evaporates water!
- Blocked or cluttered corners
- Broken items (blocked energy = blocked career)
2. Knowledge Area (Northeast) — Your “Brain Power” Corner
The Story
The Knowledge area sits in the Northeast. Think of it as your brain’s charging station! This is where wisdom, learning, and “aha!” moments come from.
What Lives Here?
| Element | Colors | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Earth 🏔️ | Blue, Green, Black | Mountains, Books |
Why These Colors?
Blue is the color of deep thinking (like a calm ocean). Green represents growth (your brain growing smarter!). Black adds depth (deep thoughts!).
Real Example
Tommy’s Story: Tommy struggled with reading. His Knowledge corner was behind a door that always stayed open, blocking that area. His mom put these things there:
- A small bookshelf with his favorite books
- A blue lamp
- A globe
Tommy started getting better grades and actually liked reading time!
What to Put Here
- Books (even just 3 favorite ones!)
- Study desk or reading chair
- Blue or teal colored items
- Pictures of wise people you admire
- Globes or maps
What to Avoid
- TV or loud electronics (distracts the brain!)
- Messy piles (messy corner = messy thinking)
- Too much red (makes you hyper, not focused)
3. Family Area (East) — Your “Family Hug” Corner
The Story
The Family area lives in the East, where the sun rises! Just like the sun brings a new day, this area brings new beginnings and keeps your family strong and connected.
What Lives Here?
| Element | Colors | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Wood 🌳 | Green & Blue | Plants, Trees |
Why Wood?
Trees have deep roots and grow tall. A good family is just like that — strong roots (grandparents, parents) and new growth (you and maybe younger siblings!). Trees also need care to stay healthy, just like families.
Real Example
The Chen Family: The Chens were arguing a lot. Their Family corner had a broken plant and old newspapers. They replaced it with:
- A healthy green plant
- Family photos in wooden frames
- A small wooden box with family memories
The arguments got less, and they started having family game nights again!
What to Put Here
- Healthy green plants (fake is okay if real ones don’t work)
- Family photos
- Wooden items or furniture
- Things in groups of 3 (represents family unity)
- Green or teal colors
What to Avoid
- Dead plants (yikes — dead family energy!)
- Metal objects (metal “cuts” wood in Feng Shui)
- Lonely single objects
4. Wealth Area (Southeast) — Your “Lucky Treasure” Corner
The Story
The Wealth area is in the Southeast. But here’s a secret: “wealth” doesn’t just mean money! It means all the good stuff — feeling rich in friends, toys, happiness, and yes, maybe some allowance too!
What Lives Here?
| Element | Colors | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Wood 🌿 | Purple, Gold, Green | Growing things |
Why Purple and Gold?
Purple has always been the color of kings and queens (they were the wealthy ones!). Gold is like… well, gold! Green represents growth — because wealth should grow, not shrink!
Real Example
Sophie’s Piggy Bank: Sophie wanted to save for a bike. Her Wealth corner had dirty laundry piled up (oops!). She cleaned it and added:
- Her purple piggy bank
- A small plant
- A gold-colored picture frame with her bike photo
She started getting extra chores to earn money, and neighbors asked her to walk their dogs!
What to Put Here
- Purple or gold colored items
- Healthy plants (especially ones with round leaves — like coins!)
- Piggy banks or savings jars
- Pictures of things you want
- Flowing water features
What to Avoid
- Trash cans (throwing away wealth!)
- Dead or dying plants
- Broken items
- Clutter (blocks money flow)
5. Fame Area (South) — Your “Shining Star” Corner
The Story
The Fame area lives in the South, and it’s all about your reputation — what people think of you! It’s also about being recognized for your awesome talents and feeling proud of yourself.
What Lives Here?
| Element | Colors | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Fire 🔥 | Red & Orange | Candles, Lights |
Why Fire?
Fire is bright and visible — everyone can see it from far away! When you want to “shine,” you need fire energy. Fire also rises UP (like your reputation rising!).
Real Example
Jake’s Art Show: Jake was a great artist, but no one noticed his work. His Fame corner was dark and had winter coats piled there. He changed it to:
- A red lamp (turned ON!)
- His best artwork displayed
- A small award trophy from soccer
Soon his art teacher picked his painting for the school gallery!
What to Put Here
- Red or orange items
- Good lighting (lamps, candles with supervision)
- Awards, certificates, trophies
- Pictures of people you admire
- Diplomas or achievements displayed
What to Avoid
- Darkness (no one sees you in the dark!)
- Water items (water puts out fire)
- Blue or black colors here
- Hiding your achievements
